Meet Jenny Lawson discussing and signing Let’s Pretend This Never Happened

Books & Books, Coral Gables. May 4, 2012. 6:30 p.m.

Jenny Lawson is an Internet phenomenon. Her irreverent blog, www.bloggess.com, averages millions or page views a month and she is one of the most popular bloggers on Twitter with 200,000+ followers and growing daily. What makes her work so widely appealing? Perhaps Jenny’s seemingly random, darkly comic stories speak to the rebel in each of us. Or maybe we can’t believe that anyone really could be that off-beat and prone to public embarrassment. No matter, Jenny counts Ellen DeGeneres and Neil Gaiman among her devoted followers, and her post about Beyoncé, her giant metal chicken was initially read by over 300,000 people in 24 hours and has now been read by over 2 million and has 33,000 Facebook fans (you’ll need to read her chapter, “And That’s Why You Should Learn to Pick Your Battle,” to find out what that’s all about).

Now Lawson fans will rejoice to learn that she has written a hilarious account of her redneck childhood, anxious adolescence and ever-eventful life with her long-suffering husband and their daughter. “Although I’m known for my highly-trafficked columns and blogs, I’ve reserved the very best stories of my life for this book,” Lawson says. “I can finally see that all the terrible parts of my life, the embarrassing parts, the incidents I’ve wanted to pretend never happened, and the things that make me ‘weird’ and ‘different’ were actually the most important part of my life. They were the parts that made me me. And this was the very reason I decided to tell this story…to celebrate the strange, to give thanks for the bizarre, and to one day help my daughter understand that the reason her mother appeared mostly naked on Fox News…is probably the same reason her grandfather occasionally brings his pet donkey into bars: Because you are defined not by life’s imperfect moments, but by your reaction to them.”

Come along with Lawson as she tells about Jenkins, her menacing and reluctant pet turkey, about getting stuck in a cow’s vagina (and you thought your high school years were awkward), or working in HR (where she learned how to say “Is this your penis?” without giggling.) Her arguments with husband Victor – sometimes in her head, occasionally via Post-Its – are priceless. And the stories of her engagement and wedding are topped only by her story of giving birth.

Jenny Lawson is a columnist and one of the most popular bloggers on Twitter (hundreds of thousands of followers). Her blog, www.thebloggess.com, averages between 2-3 million page views per month. Jenny lives in the Texas Hill Country with her husband and daughter.
