Tigertail Productions. July 2009

Six Miami-area teenagers will travel to Chicago, IL from July 14th through 19th, 2009 to compete in Brave New Voices Youth Poetry Slam Festival. The festival includes participants from 50 cities from across the country participating in workshops and readings with established poets and performers, open mikes, and the National Youth Poetry Slam itself, a competitive event. The Miami “team,” which includes a diverse range of some of South Florida’s best young writers, was selected from participants in the local WordSpeak program sponsored by the arts non-profit Tigertail Productions.

“This is an amazing opportunity for Miami’s youth to be represented in an international arena,” said Mary Luft, Tigertail’s Founder and Director. “It both showcases our area’s rich cultural fabric and gives local teens from our inner city a unique opportunity.”

The Miami teens will be accompanied to Chicago by their coach solo theater artist and director, Teo Castellanos and teen mentor Maxis Madé. The teens include Erma Lee Butler and Shamoyia Gardiner from North Miami Beach Senior, Wesley George from North Miami, Rolando Fuentes from Miami Senior High, Yarminiah Rosa and James Sprang graduates of DASH.
