12 Years a Slave opens at the Gables Cinema

From November 1 through 14, 2013.

One of this year’s most acclaimed and accomplished films, 12 Years a Slave, will start its South Florida first run engagement at the Coral Gables Art Cinema on Friday, November 1st. Winner of the People’s Choice Award at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival where it had its world premiere, and already garnering multiple Oscar predictions, the film is based on the true story of Solomon Northup – powerfully played by Chiwetel Ejiofor – a free black man from upstate New York who is abducted and sold into slavery. Directed by Steve McQueen (Shame and Hunger). 12 Years a Slave features a star-studded cast including Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brad Pitt, Alfre Woodard, Sarah Paulson and Lupita Nyong’o, among others.

The story of Northup, when published prior to the Civil War, became one of the sparks that fanned the movement to abolish slavery. The film, 12 Years a Slave, itself brings to life the raw violence and reality of the African American experience from that time in an unforgettable way. It eloquently shows audiences Northup’s early years as an educated free Black man in the North, with a wife and children, held up against the shock of his abduction into slavery, his indignation and rage, and his determination to survive and eventually regain his freedom over the course of twelve years. The portrait of the cruel and often lethal world of Southern plantations is vividly depicted in a way rarely seen on screen, with especially daring performances from Fassbender and Paulson. Time Magazine calls it, “Raw, eloquent, horrifying and essential,” and The New Yorker says, “12 Years a Slave is easily the greatest feature film ever made about American slavery.”

Tickets for all screenings are $11.50 and under and are available for purchase in advance on the Cinema’s website at www.gablescinema.com or in person at the box office during regular screening hours.
