The African Heritage Cultural Arts Center’s 3rd Annual Sankofa Jazz Fest features Grammy-winning trumpet player and multi-instrumentalist Nicholas Payton with trio members, Amina Scott and Joe Dyson in an outdoor concert on Saturday, April 8th, from 2:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at 6161 NW 22nd Avenue in Miami. Festival goers should bring lawn chairs, lots of friends (but no food, beverages or coolers allowed) and expect to enjoy a spectacular lineup which includes New Vision Sax Ensemble, Leesa Richards, Ladies of Simply Simone, Joseph Miller and the Melton Mustafa Next Generation Jazz Contest Participants.
The Sankofa Jazz Fest audience will be one of the first to hear music in concert from Payton’s newly released CD Afro-Caribbean Mixtape. Paytone Records describes it as a focused sound unique to Payton that captures “Bebop, Swing, the Great American Songbook, New Orleans second-line, Mardi Gras Indian, Instrumental Soul, Rhythm-and-Blues, Urban, Hip-Hop, and various Afro-descended dialects of Central America and the Caribbean.”
On Friday, April 7th, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., the Center will host an event where Payton will discuss his journey in music at the “Talk with Nick,” an open discussion and Q&A session with high school and adult musicians. Payton has a colorful past; he started his professional career at age ten as a member of James Andrews’ All-Star Brass and was given his first steady gig by guitarist Danny Barker at The Famous Door on Bourbon Street. New this year and in honor of Jazz Appreciation Month, a culinary component has been added to the Sankofa Jazz Fest to give festival goers an opportunity to experience flavors from diverse cuisine. Hosted by Freez Frame Marketing & Media, “Festival of Flavors” features Jamaican, Haitian, Soul Food and Vegan cuisine to be sampled from four local chefs respectively: Chef Low, Chef Stephan of Taste of Haiti, Richard Hutchinson of Jackson Soul Food and Hakin Alexander of The Vegetarian Restaurant.
