Dallas Buyers Club

Coral Gables Art Cinema. November 22 – December 6, 2013.

Dallas Buyers Club stars one of today’s true matinee idols, Matthew McConaughey, as Ron Woodroof, a hard-living, tough-talking and loudly bigoted Texas electrician, rodeo cowboy and ladies man. Suddenly his life is turned upside-down when he is told he is HIV-positive, extremely ill, with just thirty days left to live. Set in the late 1980s, and inspired by a true story, Dallas Buyers Club is a surprisingly exhilarating and feel-good movie about survival, community and one tough as nails good old boy who refuses to follow the rules. Directed by Jean-Marc Vallée (Café de Flore), it also stars Jared Leto and Jennifer Garner.

With no real treatment options in the U.S., Woodroof turns to a range of barely legal, illegal and just plain crazy ways of obtaining experimental medicines. He slowly transforms into a boundary-busting, successful entrepreneur bringing help to others with AIDS, in spite of his own myopic, homophobic and self-centered approach to life. Into his orbit comes, at first unwillingly, Garner’s Dr. Eve Saks, and the powerful and raucous character of Rayon, Lento’s star-turn as a drag queen who shares Ron’s lust for life and AIDS diagnosis. The Hollywood Reporter says, “Matthew McConaughey is in top form in a rowdy turn that’s full of piss and vinegar but also unexpected heart. But the surprise is how funny he makes the story of a man pushing back death.”

Tickets for all screenings are $11.50 and under and are available for purchase in advance on the Cinema’s website at www.gablescinema.com or in person at the box office during regular screening hours.
