David Trueba's Madrid, 1987 at the Coral Gables Cinema

From October 19 through 25, 2012.

Noted Spanish director, screenwriter and novelist David Trueba returns to the big screen with his acclaimed film Madrid, 1987. A hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the film starts its Miami first run engagement at the Coral Gables Art Cinema on Friday, October 19. A hot summer day in Madrid, political turmoil, a revered older male journalist, a beautiful young female student, and a meeting that ends with them accidentally locked in a bathroom together, are the elements that Trueba mixes together for a potent, erotic and complex brew.

Madrid, 1987 focuses on two characters who embody the duality of their times, and veteran actor José Sacristán and the fresh-faced María Valverde portray the vulnerability of their characters’ situation unforgettably. Each represents opposite generations, as intellect, ambition, and experience mix in a complex dance of seduction. The film is both spare and laced with complex, intellectual dialogue, as well as surprisingly sensual and rooted in the character’s physical bodies. Politics and sex, and the passions they bring out in us, are at the core of the story. Trueba made Madrid, 1987 independently in Spain, working for the first time in HD digital, to create this intimate, personal film.

On Friday, October 19, at 6:45 p.m. and Sunday, October 21, at 4:00 p.m., there will be a Q&A with the producer of Madrid, 1987, Jessica Berman, following the screening of the film. Berman, a Miami native who splits her time between her home town and Spain, has worked with Trueba as well as his brother, filmmaker Fernando Trueba, on numerous projects, including Soldiers of Salamina and Calle 54.

This film is unrated but no one under 17 will be admitted without an adult due to sexual situations.  Tickets for all screenings and events are available for purchase in advance at www.movietickets.com.
