First Position at the Coral Gables Art Cinema

From May 11 through 18, 2012.

Bess Kargman’s award-winning documentary follows a diverse group of six young dancers, aged 9 to 16 and from the U.S., Colombia and Israel, as they prepare for one of the world’s most prestigious ballet competitions, the Youth America Grand Prix.

They struggle through bloodied feet, near exhaustion and debilitating injuries, for a chance to enter the world of professional ballet, all the while navigating the drama of adolescence. A showcase for awe-inspiring talent, tenacity and passion, First Position paints a thrilling moving portraits of the most gifted young ballet stars of tomorrow. First Position opens on Friday, May 11 and will play seven days a week with screening times to be announced shortly. It is unrated but suitable for all ages 8 and up, and in English, Spanish, French and Hebrew with English subtitles.

With unprecedented (and exclusive) access to the Youth America Grand Prix, the largest competition that awards full scholarships to top ballet schools, First Position takes audiences on a yearlong journey around the world. Audiences have a chance to get to know some unforgettable characters during the film’s journey like: the handsomely-strong Joan grappling with missing his family in Colombia; the dedicated yet stubborn Michaela, an orphan from war-torn Sierra Leone; and swan-like Miko who is a perfectionist and overachiever, among others. First Position was named the audience choice’s first runner up for Best Documentary at the Toronto International Film Festival, won the Jury Prize at the San Francisco Documentary Festival and won the audience award at DOCNYC. Variety says, “Poised for breakout success, the pic combines the built-in drama, tension and suspense of docs such as “Spellbound” with exciting, beautifully lensed variations performed by the virtuosos of the future.”
