From the Land of the Moon (Mal de Pierres): A tale of forbidden romance at Tower Theater.

Fri 4 Aug, 2017

Gabrielle (Marion Cotillard) comes from a small village in the South of France at a time when her dream of true love is considered scandalous, and even a sign of insanity. Her parents marry her to José (Àlex Brendemühl), an honest and loving Spanish farm worker who they think will make a respectable woman of her. Despite José’s devotion to her, Gabrielle vows that she will never love José and lives like a prisoner bound by the constraints of conventional post World War II society until the day she is sent away to a hospital in the Alps to heal her kidney stones. There she meets André Sauvage (Louis Garrel), a dashing injured veteran of the Indochinese War, who rekindles the passion buried inside her. She promises they will run away together, and André seems to share her desire. Will anyone dare rob her of her right to follow her dreams?

“…a piece that is impeccably orchestrated by the director and respects the canons of melodrama right up to the poignant finale on the destiny of a woman desperately seeking true love in France during the 50s and 60s.” – Fabien Lemercier, Cineuropa | full review

“Well-heeled French cinema with a standout Cotillard.” – Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter | full review

“Marion Cotillard delivers a mesmerizing performance as the troubled Gabrielle and Louis Garrel is haunting as the soulful soldier. But it is Alex Brendemuhl who impresses as the soft-spoken husband, Jose, delivering a performance laden with quiet pain and stoicism. Expect the unexpected in this satisfyingly unorthodox love triangle.” – Bruce Demara, Toronto Star | full review

“Incurable romantics should happily surrender to its allure and the more cynical have the reward of eventually discovering that there was more going on here that initially meets the eye.” – Allan Hunter, Screen Daily | full review
