MDC’s Prometeo Theatre presents Jean Paul Sartre’s A Puerta Cerrada (No Exit)

From May 24 through June 2, 2012.

Prometeo Theatre, the theatrical component of The Center for Literature and Theatre @ Miami Dade College, will once again shine the spotlight on its students with the production of “A puerta cerrada” (No Exit) at the end of May.

In this existential classic, three people condemned to hell for their crimes find themselves in a single room with no way out. Gradually, they learn the real source of their eternal damnation – each other. This piece is directed by Yarani del Valle, and will be performed by second-year actors of Prometeo Theatre’s Conservatory in Theatre Arts.

The great French philosopher, Sartre, wrote No Exit in 1944, and through this piece perhaps best conveys his well-known line of thinking that “Hell is other people.” This one-act drama is a strong and apparent critique on the social parameters of the mid twentieth century. A criticism on the constant preoccupation of what others may think, this work is a rejection of the classic “what would they say?” Regarding the veracity of this work, del Valle believes that, “Despite it being written 68 years ago, No Exit continues to expose a sad reality about our modern day society, one created to applaud superficiality and encourage one to live based on what others will think.”

This will be the final presentation for the second-year actors of Prometeo’s Conservatory in Theatre Arts, a non-credit intensive program in Spanish that provides a rigorous curriculum in acting, voice, movement, and other related disciplines, as it prepares students for careers in the theatre. This program is unique in the nation, offering the opportunity of conservatory-style actor training in Spanish.

Performances will take place on Thursday, May 24 and Friday, May 25 at 8:00 p.m. and on Thursday, May 31 through Saturday, June 2 at 8:00 p.m. All performances will be in Spanish with English supertitles. Tickets are $10.
