In a career that took flight in 1985 with immediate commercial and critical acclaim, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has consistently displayed a chameleonic musical persona of openness, imagination and technical wizardry that sets him apart from every known guitarist. His music also is imbued with a combination of passion, sensitivity, humor, daring, and shear brilliance.
Whether bold reinventions of classical masterpieces or soulful explorations through pop-rock hits, to blazing straight-ahead jazz forays and ultramodern improvisational works—solo or with a group—Jordan can always be counted on to take listeners on breathless journeys into the unexpected – sometimes playing the piano simultaneously!
In the mid-1980s, Stanley hit the scene much heralded because of his extraordinary, even revolutionary technique and virtuosity. Curiously, he remains under-recorded as a leader. Early acclaim and a nagging desire to do more than tour has led this shy and retiring artist to eschew the limelight. While many of his dates are solo performances, he will appear for South Florida JAZZ with an exciting trio with the extraordinary bassist Charnett Moffett and drummer Kenwood Dennard, both long-term associates.
