Spain’s Baroque music icon, gambist, Jordi Savall, will appear with his son Ferran – a tenor who plays the theorbo, guitar and lute – at the New World Center on October 16, 2011.
In a rare joint appearance, the duo will perform a program titled Folias & Variations, Music Dialogues from Orient & Occident. In cooperation with Risë Kern Presents, and with the support of Miami’s Spanish Consul General, Ambassadora Cristina Barrios, the duo from Barcelona will highlight this year’s celebration of Spanish History Month.
“We couldn’t be more proud of this unique cooperation for such an auspicious event,” said Bach Society’s Board Chairman, Volker Anding, himself a former German Consul General in Miami and retired German Ambassador to Uruguay. As such he appreciates Savall as a creator and director of programs and performances, which highlight the historical similarities of musical traditions across religious and political boundaries.
After his early musical education in Spain, Jordi Savall studied and taught at the Schola Cantorum in Basel, Switzerland. He founded an Early Music ensemble of international performers in the 1980’s called Hesperion XX (known since 2000 as Hesperion XXI), later forming a vocal ensemble La Capella Reial de Catalunya and finally a Baroque orchestra, Le Concert des Nations, all of which are still active today. He came to international attention in the early 1990’s as the performer of music for “Tous les Matins du Monde”, a film about French composer Marin Marais. Called “The King of Spain,” by the New Yorker Magazine, Savall is a respected teacher, researcher, inspirational director and brilliant performer, who returns to Miami for his fourth visit.
