The Phantom of Liberty at Miami Beach Cinematheque

Oct 27, 2011. 8:00 p.m.

As part of its current series, “The Discreet Charm of Luis Buñuel”, the Miami Beach Cinematheque is screening the film The Phantom of Liberty, directed by Buñuel in 1974, starring Julien Bertheau, Miléna Vukotic, Jean Rochefort, and Michel Piccoli.

Seventy-four year-old Luis Bunuel wages war on typical narrative storytelling in The Phantom of Liberty, as we are presented with a series of stream of conscience (and sometimes autobiographical) events in his end-of-career surreal exercise concerning typical middle class characters doing a-typical things, unexpectedly, where one character leads to another, and characters do not reappear: the elegant dinner party where one man excuses himself to use the dining room; the drunken poker-playing monks using religious medals as chips; a leather-clad dominatrix having fun with a businessman; a missing little girl who provides tips to policeman searching for her; and the crackdown at the zoo bringing everything full circle.
