Tigertail presents Eric Vloeimans and Florian Weber in a Concert of Chamber Jazz

December 11, 2012, 8:00 p.m.

Tigertail presents a concert of chamber jazz with stand-out Dutch trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and German pianist Florian Weber, in the intimate, acoustically excellent setting of the Coral Gables Congregational Church, on Tuesday, December 11, at 8:00 pm.

Regarded as one of Europe’s finest performers, Eric Vloeimans’ trumpet playing captures the full range of the instrument, from brassy high notes to a reedy lower register, while his original compositions create an evocative, harmonic language of their own. Vloeimans initially studied classical music at the Rotterdam Academy of Music. He became interested in jazz after meeting musicians from Rotterdam’s jazz department and switched – graduating with distinction in 1988 and continuing his studies in New York, studying with Donald Byrd on the trumpet gaining experience playing in the big bands of Frank Foster and Mercer Ellington. He practices classical studies to maintain his technique, furthering his ability to shape improvisational ideas. Blessed with uncommon instincts, Vloeimans possesses an astute ear for musical partnerships, leading him to this collaboration with pianist Florian Weber.

Florian Weber was awarded a scholarship in 1999 to study at Berklee College of Music in Boston but instead decided to first study mathematics, physics and biology. Later, he studied piano with John Taylor in Cologne, JoAnne Brackeen and Paul Bley in Boston and Lee Konitz in New York. He has won the Steinway & Sons prize at the Montreaux Jazz Festival Solo Piano Competition and other awards. He worked with Eddy Henderson, Lee Konitz and Pat Metheny and has played many jazz festivals in addition to working with orchestras performing piano concertos by Mozart, Ravel, Gershwin, Piazolla and contemporary composers.

Vloeimans and Weber appeared in 2009 at John Zorn’s New York City venue The Stone. Their acclaimed 2011 concert at Amsterdam’s magnificent venue, the Concertgebouw, led to their CD, “Live at the Concertgebouw”. John Kelman wrote in All About Jazz that the CD “… may be one of the most elegant, delicate and emotionally honest records of the year.”

This one-night only concert is presented by the non-profit Tigertail Productions, a South Florida leader in innovative cultural work. “Our goal, as always, is to showcase the best of global culture here in Miami, and this concert fits right in with that vision,” said Tigertail Executive Director Mary Luft. “Since 2008, when we first presented Eric Vloeimans here with a jazz trio, we have wanted him to return to South Florida. This critically-acclaimed collaboration with Florian Weber gives us an excellent opportunity to do so.”
