ArtSoBay. A Celebration of the Arts at the Deering Estate

February 14 through 26, 2012.

altContemporary art exhibits, one-time only art performances, and site-specific installations are certain to awaken one’s senses when ArtSoBay opens on Saturday, February 18 at the Deering Estate at Cutler. Uniquely alternative experiences are created for the viewer when sound, taste, smell and touch are integrated into the artists’ messages. The unconventional day and evening art event is a highlight of the annual SoBay Festival of the Arts, a two-week celebration of visual, literary, and performing art collaborations.

The day begins with Thomas Daniel Burnikel, a Deering Estate Artist in Residence, leading a morning Art Take Away Workshop, where visitors use their own cameras to explore and create images that are inspired by the historic property and its’ natural surroundings. An exhibition of contemporary works by artists from each of the LegalArt and Deering Estate residency programs debuts in the Stone House and Richmond Cottage. While on-going musical vignettes are performed inside the Ballroom, outdoors in the boat basin artist Pioneer Winter performs his piece Ebb/Flow, at 3:00, 3:45 and 4:30 p.m.

Participating artists from the Deering Estate are: Visual Arts – Lucas Blanco, Thomas Daniel, Bernadette Denoux, Lucinda Linderman, Aurora Molina and Christina Pettersson; Literary Arts – Deena Blazejack and C.M. Clark. Dominique Breard, LegalArt Program Director has curated the LegalArt portion with their artists including: Justin Broadbent, Pachi Giustinian, Jiae Hwang, Julia Blaukopf, Brookhart Jonquil, Manny Prieres, TM Sisters and Pioneer Winter. The exhibit runs through Saturday, March 10.

Artist Dinorah De Jesus Rodriguez, whose alternate cinema project is incorporated with the lush mango grove that lines the Deering Estate path, greets guests at ArtSoBay Events Night. The evening also brings together this community’s most notable artists, whose works are featured in the groundbreaking exhibit, Wedding Crashers. Artist Ralph Provisero, Special Projects Curator said, “Weddings can be iconic images of momentary time. The preparation, the party and the aftermath are often based on grandiose images of fantasy or skewed reality. With the Deering Estate being such a popular wedding destination, these art installations, though curated for the spaces they occupy, are wedding crashers – uninvited witnesses that nonetheless embody a presence as fantastical as their surroundings.”

Wedding Crasher artists include: Rene Barge, Bhakti Baxter, Felecia Chizuko Carlisle, Robert Chambers, Clifton Childree, William Cordova, Jason Hedges, Michael Loveland, Cheryl Pope, Leyden Rodriguez-Casanova, Frances Trombly and Wendy Wischer.

The evening also features on-going performance art: Contact with Rene Barge and the transformation of sound with crowd participation, Lucinda Linderman Excess Extravagance, Jason Hedges Vertical Spits and C.M. Clark presenting a poetry reading. There is an informal reception with an opportunity to meet all of the artists and curators. ArtSoBay Event Night runs from 6:30 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. and there is no admission charge.
