The Brazilian Film Festival is presenting a series of screenings at the Miami Beach Cinematheque from June 6th through 11th, 2009. All screenings will be part of a tribute to Brazilian director Bruno Barreto. The 2000 film Bossa Nova, featuring Amy Irving, Antônio Fagundes, Pedro Cardoso and Alexandre Borges, will be presented first on June 6th, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. A romantic comedy wrapped in Tom Jobim’s unforgettable standards, the film pays homage to a Rio de Janeiro that survives in the city’s extraordinary beauty and the unequaled charm of it citizens. It tells a love story or love stories that could happen anywhere in the world, but this one happens in Rio, where life has a special rhythm all of its own.
The 2005 film O Casamento de Romeu e Julieta (Romeo and Juliette Get Married), featuring Luana Piovani, Luiz Gustavo, Marco Rica and Martha Mellinger, will be screened on June 7th at 8:00 p.m. Juliet, a die-hard Palmeiras fan falls in love with Romeo, die-hard fan of rival soccer team Corinthians. Juliet’s father would never accept such a son-in-law. Not wanting to lose Juliet, Romeo pretends to be a Palmeiras fan. The lie creates a series of hilarious twists and turns, and when the truth is revealed, the couple’s love must rise above their family’s sports rivalry.
On June 8th at 8:00 p.m., the festival will be going back in time with the legendary film by director Bruno Barreto, Dona Flor e Seus Dois Maridos (Dona Flor and Her Two Husbands), featuring Sonia Braga, José Wilker, Mauro Mendonça and Dinorah Brillanti. After her first husband dies, Dona Flor feels lonely until she meets a man who offers her security and stability. But it’s her other husband who she really desires, and whose ghost puts them all in extremely unexpected situations.
On June 9th, at 8:00 p.m., the 1997 film O Que E Isso, Companheiro? (Four Days in September), featuring Alan Arkin, Fernanda Torres, Pedro Cardoso and Luiz Fernando Guimarães, will be screened as part of the same tribute. A fictionalized account based on the true story of the kidnapping of American Ambassador Charles Burke Elbrick by a group of young middle-class idealists in Rio de Janeiro in 1969. A 1998 best foreign film Academy Award nominee.
On June 10th at 8:00 p.m. there will be the screening of the film Caixa Dois (Money on the Side), from 2007, featuring Giovanna Antonelli, Cássio Gabus Mendes, Zezé Polessa and Thiago Fragoso. A fat check, result of shady transactions, intertwines the fate of a bank manager and his revered boss. The characters – the manager, the banker, their respective wives, children, consultants, politicians, lovers, secretaries – and their values are exposed as the dirty money gets passed from one hand to the next. Throughout a well-crafted comedy of errors, Money on the Side addresses the distortions created by capitalism in a culture of corruption.
Finally, on June 11th at 8:00 p.m., the festival presents the film Carried Away from 1996, featuring Dennis Hopper, Amy Hirving, Amy Locane, Julie Harris and Gary Busey. Joseph and Rosealee have maintained a relationship of convenience that has deprived them both of the passion they so eagerly crave. Despite her numerous declarations of her love and desire to marry him, Rosealee cannot get through to Joseph, who keeps his emotions locked up in an impenetrable facade. When Rosealee learns of Joseph’s clandestine romance, a great deal of soul searching is required for them to mend their relationship, and discover what they have found – the ability to live life to its fullest.
