Coral Gables Cinema presents Carancho

Apr 22 through 28, 2011.

altIn Carancho Sosa (Darín) is an ambulance-chasing personal injury attorney with questionable ethics. Lujan (Martina Gusman, Lion’s Den) is a young, idealistic doctor, new to Buenos Aires, working the emergency detail at a city hospital. Slowly, a courtship ensues, informed by the crashes and after midnight encounters of their respecitvie work and overlapping lives.

Their tenuous romance is repeatedly upended and threatened by Sosa’s turbulent past, and current entanglements.

A disturbing and dark view of Buenos Aires, Carancho is also an ill-fated and intense love story, and Ricardo Darín has never been more charismatic. The New York Times says that Carancho “Gives vivid life to an industry that preys on the vulnerable…unfolding among the corrupt and the desperate, on damp nighttime streets and in bouncing ambulances” and The Village Voice raves about the “camera navigating physical and emotional spaces with the fatalistic urgency and despair of film noir.”

Director’s Statement
“This film is a black thriller. Like those in the 40s or 50s, in which the detective-like plot is silently shaped into the portrait of a complex social pattern. It is also about the private lives of two characters trying to live through an unstable world, where a seemingly minor act may well trigger a series of fatal outcomes. It is, in its own way, a love story between a man and a woman, immersed in a market where disgrace is the currency.” – Pablo Trapero.
