The Institute for Communication, Entertainment and Media of St. Thomas University presents the Red Carpet Grand Premiere of the documentary film “Blooming Hope: Harvesting Smiles in Port-de-Paix” on Saturday, April 24th, 2010 at 7:00 p.m. at the Little Haiti Cultural Center.
In May 2008, Marcela Moyano-Rosero, St. Thomas University professor of Mass Media and Communications, travelled to Haiti to learn about the university’s three long-term development projects in Port-de-Paix, Haiti. The trip inspired Moyano-Rosero to work with students and produce a positive documentary about ordinary Haitians who lead the projects and who, together with the university, are bringing substantive change to the region.
The documentary chronicles the lives and work of Elicoeur Beabrum, a coffee farmer from the town of Ma Wouj and member of the COCANO fair-trade coffee cooperative; Tata Dumasie, a craftswoman from the Atelier Thevenet fair-trade artisan initiative in Jean Rabel; and 300 schoolchildren from the remote seashore village of Baie-de-Henne who benefit from a sustainable solar oven project.
“The film captured the spirit of the Haitian people and takes viewers to Haiti’s stunning mountains, ocean and scenery while contributing to fundraising efforts for our impoverished neighbors” adds Monsignor Franklyn Casale, President of St. Thomas University.
St. Thomas University’s faculty, students and staff are rolling out the red carpet on April 24th to celebrate the work and commitment of all those involved in the production of the documentary film and in each of the three sustainable projects. Beaming down in attendance will include the film producers (Marcela Moyano-Rosero and Fernando Rosero), the musical director (Raul Rosero Polo), musical interpreters (Evelyne Baille, Fresnel Larosiliere, Aura Perez and Juan Raul Rosero), the director of the Center for Justice and Peace of St. Thomas University (Anthony P. Vinciguerra), and the South Florida Youth Symphony interpreting the film’s musical score under the direction of Margorie Hahn and Dr. Richard Yaklich.
Theatre doors open at 7:00 p.m. The evening will start with a musical performance at 7:30 p.m., followed by the screening of the 40-minute documentary film and a cocktail reception. This documentary premiere will truly capture audiences interested in the future of Haiti and its long-term development. The three projects portrayed in the film have offered relief opportunities for the January 12 earthquake survivors.
