Miami Dade College's MDC Live Arts Opens Season With Acclaimed Flamenco Company Nuevo Ballet Español

October 5 and 6, 2012. 8:00 p.m.

At the forefront of emerging trends in Spanish dance and flamenco, Nuevo Ballet Español draws on traditional dance, a 21st century pop sensibility and folkloric influences from Andalucía. In their new show, Cambio de Tercio, Angel Rojas and Carlos Rodríguez, two of Spain’s most influential choreographers, deliver a dazzling mix of traditional and contemporary styles, performed by the full company of dancers and musicians in an exciting opening to MDC Live Arts’ 22nd season.

Rojas and Rodríguez also explore the idea of transformation: from the street to the stage, from today to yesterday, from Spanish dance to flamenco music. As the British newspaper Metro states it “Rojas and Rodríguez put a fresh spin on flamenco that taps into passions both old and new.”

MDC Live Arts is an initiative of MDC’s Cultural Affairs Department, created in 1990 as Cultura del Lobo. MDC Live Arts continues a long legacy of bringing unique, diverse performances from around the world to South Florida.  The mission is to present the newest, most challenging contemporary and culturally specific work being created in the U.S. and abroad, with an emphasis on the Americas, and to present work that is reflective of our multi-ethnic community. Our series brings exceptional national and international performing artists to the region and provides opportunities for extensive community engagement through residency activities within the eight-campus college system, and through partnerships with other local arts providers.
