From Apr 1st through May 9th, 2009. 
The Miami Dance Festival is a six-week celebration with seven dance companies presenting a dynamic schedule of diverse international dance styles and festival events. Participating companies include Momentum Dance Company, Ballet Flamenco La Rosa, the Dance Now! Ensemble, Iroko Afro-Cuban Dance Theater, Bollywood dancer Geeta Dias, Brazz Dance Theater and Siempre Flamenco. Festival performances and master classes will be held throughout Miami and Miami Beach at venues including the Colony Theater, Miami Beach Cinematheque, the Manuel Artime Theater, the Byron Carlyle Theatre and Performing Arts Network. Now in its sixth year, the Miami Dance Festival evolved from the original Miami Beach Dance Festival.

April 1st, 2009. 8:00 p.m. Ballet Flamenco La Rosa World Premiere. Manuel Artime Theater. This dynamic Flamenco dance/drama premiere is based on Shakespeare’s powerhouse play King Lear. April 2nd, 2009. 8:00 p.m. Iroko Afro-Cuban Dance Theater and Siempre Flamenco in Mojito Andaluz. Manuel Artime Theater. Mojito Andaluz is an innovative only-in-Miami fusion of Afro-Cuban and flamenco dance with live music. It features fiery Flamenco soloist Celia Fonta of Siempre Flamenco and Iroko Artistic Director Elena Garcia with a group of virtuoso dancers in this intoxicating cultural mix! April 3rd and 4th, 2009. 8:00 p.m. Momentum Dance Company in Concert. Manuel Artime Theater. Momentum reflects on its modern dance roots with both new and historic works. Artistic Director Delma Iles premieres a new satirical work inspired, or maybe provoked, by the current economic crisis. The program includes Iles’ highly acclaimed and meditative work Mandala with its critically praised lighting design by Bruce Brown; and Anna Sokolow’s historic 1985 lyrical work Poems of Scriabin, created for Momentum by the modern dance genius during a visit to Miami; and former soloist Odman Felix’s Harum, a smash hit at the recent Miami International Book Fair Gala. April 7th, 2009. Bollywood Film Night! Miami Beach Cinematheque. Noted Indian dancer and teacher Geeta Dias will give an informal presentation on the Bollywood style dance that has evolved from the world’s largest film industry, followed by a screening of a typical Bollywood musical. April 10th and 11th, 2009. 8:30 p.m. Brazz Dance Theater in Dreaming Amazonia. Colony Theater. Brazz Dance Theater opens its 2009 performance season with the premiere of an exciting, strong, stirring, and vibrant work, Dreaming Amazonia. Artistic Director and choreographer Augusto Soledade explores the current state of the Amazon forest in Brazil as a natural living environment for indigenous communities, and to juxtapose it to the natural living environment for city dwellers creating choreography that is moving and contemporary. Through dance, this new work represents complex and universal realities such as the urban versus rural dichotomy, and the potential for transformation as we interact with each other, the world, and our various living environments. April 23rd, 2009. 7:00 p.m. Lecture/Performance on Historic Modern Dance. Free admission at the Coral Gables Public Library features Momentum Dance Company with guest artist Dr. Andrea Seidel. One of the few contemporary companies in Florida that includes historic dance works as a regular part of its repertory, Momentum dancers will perform excerpts from Anna Solokow’s Poems of Scriabin (1985), Doris Humphrey’s Water Study (1928), and Jose Limon’s The Exiles (1954) A nationally recognized expert in historic reconstruction, Dr Seidel will perform a solo by Isadora Duncan, and will speak on the issues concerning the preservation and reconstruction of historic work as well as the need to keep our important dance heritage available to the public. May 3rd, 2009. 3:00 p.m. Dance Now Ensemble Dance in the Park, North Shore Open Space Park. Free Event. Dance Now! joins the Arts in the Park series to celebrate the arts in North Beach. The performance includes a new site-specific work created for this outdoor venue, and an interactive improvisational work with music by Yoel Del Sol Cuban Percussion Ensemble. May 9th and 10th, 2009. 8:00 p.m. Dance Now! Ensemble in Best of Now! Byron Carlyle Theater. Dance Now! presents world premieres and highlights from its repertory in this season finale.
