New Theatre presents High Dive

Through Feb 13, 2011.

altNew Theatre’s 25th Anniversary continues with the one-person production of High Dive by award-winning playwright, Leslie Ayvazian, running through February 13, 2011. Atop a high dive, a woman terrified of heights chronicles her comic misadventures of past vacations, while her son and a cast of 34 goad her to take the plunge. High Dive is a light comedy starring five-time Carbonell nominated actress, Barbara Sloan, where half hour before the performance begins she casts the show’s supporting role (one-liners) from audience members who are willing to participate.

Leslie Ayvazian is a member of The Ensemble Studio Theatre and a Vineyard Theatre Artist. She has written several one-woman shows, one-acts and full-length plays, among them are: Rosemary and I (Susan Smith Blackburn Prize finalist), Nine Armenian (John Gassner Outer Critics Award for Best New Play, the Roger L. Stevens Award, the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize (2nd place), Columbia University’s Anahid Literary Award).  She has collaborated with
Playwright Richard Greenberg on the HBO film, Emma in Concert; on a cabaret show for Maureen McGovern and wrote the Showtime short film Every Three Minutes, which was awarded the Telly Award for excellence. Ms. Ayvazian has taught playwriting as a guest artist at Oberlin College, Smith College, Columbia University, Sarah Lawrence College, Brooklyn College, the Stella Adler Studio, Drew University, NYU and others and has been an adjunct professor at Columbia University and Sarah Lawrence College, where she taught playwriting in the Master’s program.

High Dive is directed by New Theatre’s Artistic Director, Ricky J. Martinez and returning is Production Stage Manager Vanessa L. Thompson.

“The show involves the audience as well. There are thirty-four people involved…and though it’s a risky gimmick…it works!” – NY Times.
“High Dive is well worth the plunge. This brief and light-hearted look at Ayvazian’s misadventures…is an engaging and often hilarious show from beginning to end.” – NY Daily News.

Performance times:
Performances are Thursday – Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. Additional Sundays at 5:30 p.m. on February 6 and 13, 2011.
