New World School of the Arts continues its theater run with the popular musical Cabaret

From February 8 through 17, 2013. Louise O. Gerrits Theater.

New World School of the Art’s college theater students bring life to the seedy Kit Kat Klub as they present the popular musical CABARET. Written by Christopher Isherwood with music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, the NWSA adaptation will be directed by Dean of Theater Patrice Bailey with musical direction by Jeff Hess. The 26-member cast comprised of college sophomores, juniors, and seniors will be accompanied by the NWSA symphony ensemble’s live music.

“The first theatrical production of Cabaret opened in 1966 and it is fascinating to explore this production 46 years later to find that it still has tremendous resonance today,” said Bailey. “Cabaret offers our students the opportunity to explore the “moral decay” and the political agenda of Nazi Germany in the 1930’s and to discover that much of the political rhetoric hasn’t changed much in today’s world.”

Based on John Van Druten’s 1951 play I Am a Camera, CABARET is set in 1931 Germany as the Nazis are rising to power. The plot centers on nightlife at the seedy Kit Kat Klub and revolves around Sally Bowles, [played by BFA 2013 Maliá Kekia Nicolini] a 19-year-old British cabaret performer and her relationship with the young American writer Cliff Bradshaw. A just as intriguing sub-plot develops as a doomed romance between German boarding house owner Fräulein Schneider and her elderly suitor Herr Schultz, a Jewis fruit vendor flourishes. Overseeing the action is the Master of Ceremonies at the Kit Kat Klub which serves as a constant metaphor for the tenuous and threatening state of late Weimar Germany throughout the show.

Performances take place on February 8, 9, 15 and 16 at 7:30 p.m., and on February 10 and 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Louise O. Gerrits Theater in downtown Miami. General admission is $15, students and seniors is $10. Tickets can be purchased online at nwsa.mdc.edu
