Rising Stars, a unique exhibition and performance, showcases the remarkable talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida’s premier arts institution. This Broadway-style extravaganza is a professionally staged, energy-packed, one-of-a-kind performance that will undoubtedly captivate the audience with exhilarating works of art, and enthralling dance, music, and theater performances.
The Exhibition
The evening of March 25 will begin with an unequaled Rising Stars visual arts showcase at the New World Gallery. Featuring artwork specifically curated for Rising Stars, the show will be representative of the student body that comprises NWSA. Exhibiting artists will include both high school and college students.
The Performance
Sponsored by Bank of America, The Rising Stars performing arts showcase will feature repertory from the Dance, Music and Theater Divisions. With works by NWSA’s renowned faculty members, Peter London and Gerard Ebitz, among others, the evening will present a vibrant and varied selection of choreographies. ARNO, inspired by Tchaikovsky’s Sextet in D Minor, explores the Arno River, which runs through the heart of Firenze and its relevance as a source of life, sustenance, destruction and death. Excerpt from, The Virgin Queen by world-renowned choreographer, Darshan Singh Bhuller, will also be presented.
Conducted by Alfred Gershfeld, the exuberant NWSA Symphony Orchestra will present Rachmaninov’s Symphony No. 2 in E Minor while the Concert Choir, featuring more than 100 musicians under the direction of Albert Clark, will interpret Cloudburst by Eric Whitacre, in collaboration with the dance division – directed by Dale Andree. The spirited award-winning wind-ensemble, directed by Lee Michael Morrison, will culminate the music division presentation with Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3 in C minor.
Works by the theater division will include excerpts from the Broadway musical Curtains with lyrics by Fred Ebb, music by John Kander as well as from the Musical The Drowsy Chaperone book by Bob Martin and Don McKellar and lyrics and music by Lisa Lambert & Greg Morrison. A Restoration Comedy The Girl From Maxim’s by George Feydeau, will round off the theater presentation.
After the performance, guests will have an opportunity to continue the fête at La Loggia Restaurant, just west of the Gusman Theater on Flagler Street, where savory hors d’oeuvres and scrumptious entrees will be offered in celebration of the magical evening.
NWSA Rising Stars Alumnus Award
The NWSA Rising Stars Alumnus Award is presented each year during Rising Stars to a high school or college graduate from New World School of the Arts, who is successfully contributing to his or her art form. In selecting candidates for this prestigious recognition, the NWSA administration and deans of the four arts strands convene and evaluate each nominee’s artistic achievements, as well as their growth and development as artists. One alumnus is then selected to represent one of the divisions. In honor of Daniel Lewis, founding Dean of Dance at NWSA, the Dance Division takes center stage this year by recognizing dancer Miguel Quinones.
Miguel was born in Jamaica Queens, New York and grew up in Miami, Florida. At the age of seven, he began his dance studies at the Miami Conservatory under Ruth Weisen. He further studied at the Dance Theatre of Harlem and with Barbara Delgado at the Joe Michaels Dance Studio. Miguel attended the New World School of the Arts High School and graduated with a focus in Visual Arts. Throughout his training, he has worked with choreographers such as Michael Uthoff, Jennifer Muller, Donald McKayle, and has performed works by Robert Battle, Jose Limon, and Peter London. Miguel joined the Company in July 2005 after receiving his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Dance from New World College in May 2005.
