A showcase of talent, versatility, and virtuosity the New World School of the Arts College Spring Dance Concert presents a wide range of exciting dance works – two classics by modern dance masters and four contemporary premieres.
“This program represents the culmination of the year’s work in which the dancers immerse themselves in the artistry and passion of choreography and bring it to life onstage. The evening will include rigorous partnering, dynamic solos, and precision group dancing in works that range from wildly witty to profoundly dramatic,” announced Mary Lisa Burns, dean of dance at NWSA.
The College Spring Dance Concert starts at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 12, 13 and 14, and at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 15th. General admission is $12. Students and seniors $5. Tickets available at nwsa.mdc.edu. For more information please call 305.237.3341.
The program will feature six dances, including two from the repertory of iconicmodern dance works and four premieres. Martha Graham’s powerful and dramatic work from 1936, Prelude to Action, created just prior to WWII invokes the need for unity in forging the future. Another highlight of the concert, set to a lively jazz score, is Session for Six – choreographed in 1958 by Anna Sokolow, a master of early modern dance. In addition, Darshan Singh Bhuller’s (Mapping #1) which utilizes video technology to turn the stage space and the conventions of choreography literally upside down will premier as well Gerard Ebitz’s They Came from the North, a playful, skillfully executed theatrical dance that humorously invokes grade-B sci-fi films and the world of early 1960’s television. Arnold Quintane’s new work for NWSA dancers is a study in classic minimalism, set to a driving electronic musical score while Josée Garant has made a new dance, Short Stories, which brings the story, the storyteller, the book, and the pages of the story alive in movement.
