The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts presents the grand finale of the classical season featuring a one-night-only solo piano recital by the classical music superstar Lang Lang on May 17, 2012 in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Lang Lang brings his virtuosity, refined musical sensitivity, and personal charm back to the Center for this exciting solo engagement. The program will feature Bach’s popular Partita No.1 in B-flat Major, Schubert’s technically challenging Sonata in B-flat Major, D. 960, and Chopin’s 12 Etudes Op. 25. The evening is sponsored by Elizabeth and Nathan Leight.
A free pre-concert lecture by James Barron, New York Times reporter and author of Piano: The Making of a Steinway Concert Grand, will be held in the Center’s Peacock Education Center at 7:00 p.m. Barron’s book, initially a nine-part series, chronicles the making of a Steinway piano from start to finish, as well as a test drive by Lang Lang himself. This engagement is presented as part of the 2011-2012 John S. and James L. Knight Masterworks Season, Sanford and Beatrice Ziff Classical Music Series and is sponsored by Steinway Piano Gallery of Miami.
Lang Lang has become an international phenomenon, playing sold out recitals and concerts in every major city in the world. He was the first Chinese pianist to perform with the Vienna and Berlin philharmonic orchestras as well as all of the top-tier American orchestras. In 2008, he was seen by more than five billion people when he performed in the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympics. He has played for numerous international dignitaries and was recently invited to perform for President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jin-tao at the White House State Dinner. The superstar pianist’s influence and status in China has helped to inspire over 40 million Chinese children to learn to play piano – a phenomenon dubbed by NBC’s The Today Show as “the Lang Lang effect.” Testimony to his success, Time magazine included Lang Lang in its 2009 list of the “100 Most Influential People in the World.” He recently released his new CD Liszt, My Piano Hero and DVD Liszt, Now! to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the great composer.
