The Bill Cosford Cinema at the University of Miami presents a very special premiere event, The Gold Rush, featuring an original score conducted and performed by students from the Frost School of Music, on Thursday, April 19 at 7:00 p.m. In addition, winners from the Cosford’s first silent student film competition will screen their short films before the main feature.
“The Gold Rush is one of Chaplin’s most iconic films, where he strikes the perfect balance between comedy and pathos, which were his signatures,” said Trae DeLellis, director of the Cosford Cinema. “The Artist and Hugo have brought attention back to silent film, but essentially its resurgence has to do with its universality and the timeless films produced by Chaplin and others.”
UM Frost School of Music student Ryan Reeson created the original score that will accompany Chaplin’s 1925 classic about a bumbling prospector’s search for gold and love in Alaska.
Chaplin’s The Gold Rush is part of the Cosford Classics series. The silent student film competition was an opportunity for UM film students to create new work in a genre they hadn’t worked with before.
“There is something so charming and simple about silent comedy. All of the little nuances and facial expressions become monumental,” said Brianne McKay, a senior majoring in motion pictures. “The chance to create a silent short was a fun addition to our spring semester.”
The Gold Rush also screens (without performance) on Friday, April 19 at 9 p.m., Saturday, April 20 at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday, April 22 at 4:15 p.m. Tickets are $9 for general admission, $7 with discounts for seniors and UM alumni, and free for UM students.
