South Florida Jazz: New York Standards Quartet

Jan 7, 2017, 8 PM

Jazz South Florida celebrates 25 years of jazz with The New York Standards Quartet (NYSQ), formed in 2006 by four master musicians. Four recorded and busy musicians with their own bands, educators at the collegiate level in the New York area decided to get together. Tim Armacost in tenor and soprano saxes; flute; David Berkman in piano; Ugonna Okegwo in acoustic bass and Gene Jackson in drums.

By playing jazz standards like “All the Things You Are,” they put the focus on the playing of the tune, not so much the melody itself. NYSQ expanded the approach to include interesting arrangements of these tunes, as well as some original compositions derived from more traditional standards.
