The Princess Diaries (35mm)

Sat Sep 21, 2019

For teenager Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), just surviving each school day is an adventure. Then the shocking news arrives that she’s a real-life princess! So begins a comical transformation towards poise and princess-ness, including a media storm, jealous schoolmates, and a plot to take over her country. The Princess Diaries features the breakthrough role for Anne Hathaway, who before this had starred in the short-lived series Get Real; much like her character Mia, this was a transformative film for her Hathaway, who became a bonafide actress after its release. And it certainly helps to co-star along none other than the great Julie Andrews! An unexpected commercial success, the film is a testament to the power of Disney to tap into the dreams of children. After all, who hasn’t dreamed of being royalty?

Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries, will introduce the screening via Skype. You’ll also get a chance to meet her on September 24 at Books & Books where she will present her new book, No Judgments.

After Hours is the best films you never saw on the big screen (or maybe you did) from late-night cult classics to foreign favorites and even summer blockbusters every Saturday night often on 35mm. Tickets include a free popcorn and happy hour. Please note that unclaimed pre-ordered tickets will be sold to the rush line 30 mins after showtime.

U.S., 2001, 111 min, 35mm, Dir. Garry Marshall, Rated G, Swank
