The Standard Miami Beach is on the cusp of a dynamic renovation that will include the demolishing of its east wing, reports The Real Deal, which used to be the Lido Spa Hotel and is currently comprised of hotel rooms, a spa, and the outdoor Lido Bayside Grill.
The Miami Beach Design Review Board unanimously approved the application yesterday, which calls for building a new three-story building with parking on the ground floor, hotel rooms, and a new spa.
The 100-room hotel at 40 Island Avenue will not be altering its room capacity. Rene Gonzalez—tour his Morningside home here—is the project architect and expressed the new construction would be at a higher elevation “to address sea level rise.”
In addition to tearing down the east wing, the plans also call for minimal demolition of the front facade in order to build a car lane that will lead into the new garage. However, Standard International stressed in its application that the portion of the front facade with the most prominent MiMo features will remain intact. “The retention of the recognizable, front facade has been a critical part of this renovation,” the Feb. 21 application letter states.
