Micky Wolfson’s Documentary. From Dec 22nd through 28th, 2008.  WLRN Channel 17. Miami Art NewsWLRN Channel 17 goes behind the scenes with a new and exciting documentary chronicling Micky Wolfson’s rise as the son of a socially and politically prominent Miami family.  Souvenirs: The Many Worlds of Micky Wolfson highlights his staking of his own territory and the subsequent evolution of a world-class collector of decorative arts and propaganda. We witness Wolfson’s collecting mania and the dramatic ups and downs of his creations, the Wolfsonian-FIU and its sister museum, the Wolfsoniana in Genoa, Italy.

As a child, when Micky first laid his eyes on his first shiny brass hotel key, he knew he was going to be a collector. Not of hotel keys, but of something much more original, propanganda objects – things that had a story to tell. In this one-hour documentary produced by WLRN and filmmakers Vera Graaf and Max Scott, the documentary explores Wolfson’s evolution from collector to founder of America’s most original museums, as seen through his own eyes and those of his contemporaries.

Wolfson is a man who likes material things and has traveled far and wide to collect them. Only this time filmakers are right there capturing the art in how Wolfson collects everyday objects, such as cocktail shakers and subway turnstiles, and places them on exhibit in a museum. So far he has bought around 125,000 objects, including paintings, sculptures, posters, ceramics, and furniture. However, he is best known for his fascist and Nazi propaganda pieces.

The filmmakers accompany Wolfson on a tour of the museum and viewers will hear, first-hand, the fascinating stories behind the objects on display. The viewers will delve into the warehouses and storage facilities that hold the majority of Wolfson’s more than 100,000 objects, marveling at the seductive quality and propaganda. They’ll follow Wolfson on a buying trip overseas, where he displays his uncanny instinct for finding important pieces for the collection.

Narrated by Faith Middleton, host of the Faith Middleton Show on WNPR/WNPR.ORG, Wolfson tells his story in his own words. In addition, filmmakers entwined 18 interviews throughout the film in which scholars, historians, friends and foes of the collector are questioned. Archival film footage and family photographs help to illuminate the collector’s background and family history.  Join us Monday, December 22nd at 8p.m., as we air for the first time on television, Souvenirs: The Many Worlds of Micky Wolfson.

Souvenirs will repeat on Friday, December 26th at 8:00 p.m. and 11:00p.m., Saturday, December 27th at 1:00 p.m., and Sunday, December 28th at 7:00 p.m.
