Marlena Shaw at Coral Gables Congregational Church

July 27th, 2006Marlena Shaw is a sould legend universally admired for her warm, supple voice and relaxed charm. Her repertoire incorporates jazz, R&B, pop, rock, soul, disco, blues and gospel and still her originality makes such distinctions irrelevant. Each song becomes intimate and new. Raised on gospel and jazz, Marlena’s first public performance was at the age of 10, at the legendary Apollo Theater. Since then, Marlena has fronted big bands and orchestras, among them Basie’s , Frank Foster’s Loud Minority Band, the Smithsonian and Seattle Repertory Orchestras. Marlena has performed and recorded with Ray Brown, Benny Carter, and Joe Williams. Additionally, she toured with Sammy Davis Jr. for four years, graced every major jazz festival in the world, and venues such as Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. She was the first female vocalist ever signed to Blue Note Records, with whom she made five albums and several singles.
