Bodybuilding. A Marimekko Experience

March 13th. 7:30 – 9:30 PM

altMarimekko Miami will collaborate with Miami’s Design and Architecture Senior High School (DASH) to present a “bodybuilding” performance Saturday, March 13th, 7:30 – 9:30 pm.  Coinciding with the Design District’s Art + Design Night, Marimekko Miami’s storefront windows will set the stage for ten students in a live performance produced by Fernando Calzadilla, a renowned performance artist and teacher at DASH. The students will engage in a dynamic, unrehearsed exploration of architectural form and costume construction using Marimekko’s signature fabrics.

Without scissors or a sewing machine, the students will work in pairs within the confines of the provided materials: clips, tape, staples, balsa wood sticks and fabric of various sizes. As one member of the pair focuses on design, the other will play the role of “bodybuilder” – their body operating as the support structure for the architecture/costume.  Viewable from inside and outside of Marimekko’s 3,157 square-foot store, the students’ improvisations will be completely in-the- moment, a perfect warm-up for an Art Basel Miami Beach 2010 performance.

Marimekko is a leading Finnish design company established in 1951. Made famous in the US when Jackie Kennedy wore a Marimekko dress on the cover of Life magazine. The combination of creative design and excellent workmanship has won Marimekko products high international renown and enduring success.
