In a year which has meant cuts and reductions for almost every arts organization, Miami’s Dance Now! Ensemble was no exception. “We slashed our weeks of work with the dancers from 24 to 13 this year.” Says Co-Director Hannah Baumgarten. “It was a heartbreaking decision, but we told our dancers the news at the end of last year, and many left to find work elsewhere.”
DNE’s 10th Anniversary season, however lean, brought with it good fortune, with the company’s pivotal invitation to become the Resident Company at Miami’s Little Haiti Cultural Center. “We are so blessed to have access to this amazing facility – a platform to unify all of our creative and educational programs, and we hope to help create ongoing arts activities at the Center for years to come. It was an amazing gift”, says Co-Director Diego Salterini. The company itself has also reaped the benefits of its ten years in education – this season alone, five of the company’s dancers were trained as teens by Directors Baumgarten and Salterini, some coming home to dance with the troupe from as far away as Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and the Boston Conservatory, and one has returned as a development intern while she gets her Masters in non-profit management.
The Centerpiece of the final shows of this season will be the premiere of DECADE. This new work, a montage of excerpts from the more than ten years of choreography created by the two directors individually and collectively was inspired by Ohad Naharin’s Decadance, a montage of similar design. Another South Florida Premiere will be the Directors’ newest collaboration: Night Run, a dark, driving, tense, ensemble work to the rich sounds of Renée Aubry.
The season will also feature Melody in Four Parts: Just Travelling, a World Premiere from Salterini, developed over a year of work in conjunction with Seattle based poet Janée Baugher and Ohio based and Cincinnati Conservatory of Music educated electronic music composer Jenny Merkowitz.
The Company’s Spring Performance Season kicked off last April 23rd at the Coco Plum Women’s Club in Coral Gables, followed by a performance at the Neighborhood Nights Series at the Little Haiti Cultural Center on April 30th, and Ten Year’s of Now! as Part of the Miami Dance Festival will serve as the closing performance for a company’s season that reminds us of the high quality dance which has been born and bred in South Florida. Admission is $30 for general admission; $25 advance; $15 students/seniors.
