2008 – 2009 Season.  Miami City Ballet. Miami BalletThis October, the Miami City Ballet begins a new season offering performances at Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade, Broward Center for the Performing Arts in Fort Lauderdale, and Kravis Center for the Performing Arts in West Palm Beach.

Program I opens with the Company Premiere of George Balanchine’s Swan Lake Act II. Program II will present the company premiere of modern choreographer Paul Taylor’s highly charged Mercuric Tidings danced to music by Schubert. Also performed on this program is Edward Villella’s The Fox-Trot: Dancing in the Dark Act III from the full-length ballet The Neighborhood Ballroom, and Balanchine’s Grand Ballet Imperial danced to music by Tchaikovsky.

Program III will feature the return of the 19th century classic Don Quixote set to music by Léon Minkus and choreography by Marius Petipa and Alexander Gorsky. This work is filled with plenty of ballet action and Spanish-style dancing and is one of the largest productions ever performed by Miami City Ballet, featuring nearly fifty dancers.

Program IV will showcase the company premiere of Jerome Robbins’ In the Night, a dreamy romantic work danced by three couples, after dark, to nocturne piano pieces by Chopin. Also featured on this program are Balanchine’s Concerto Barocco, set to music by Bach, and Symphony in C danced to music by Bizet. Last but not least, Miami City Ballet will present George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker, the holiday season family event that features a cast of more than one hundred professional dancers and students from Miami City Ballet School.
