Miami Dade College (MDC) and its Museum of Art + Design (MDC MA+D) will host a special dedication for Enrique Martinez Celaya’s The Tower of Snow just outside MDC’s Freedom Tower, on the corner of Sixth Street & Biscayne Blvd.
A large-scale bronze sculpture created by distinguished Cuban-born artist Enrique Martínez Celaya, The Tower of Snow honors the 50th anniversary of Operation Pedro Pan, which brought thousands of Cuban children, without their parents, to the United States in pursuit of freedom and stability.
“For years, feelings of displacement and foreignness had seemed specific to my experience, then I began to read about the ‘Operación Pedro Pan’ and I found my story in many of their accounts. This recognition brought along a new sense of belonging to a group larger than myself, a group whose longing did not fit in any one heart,” said Martinez Celaya.
The Tower of Snow will be placed in a small park across from the Freedom Tower and will face the port of Miami, where it will remind all of the struggles of past generations and will welcome the new, younger generations full of hope and optimism.
Since 2005, the Freedom Tower at Miami Dade College has served as the flagship venue for premier exhibitions and the administrative offices of MDC’s Museum & Galleries of Art + Design; including the newly founded, MDC Museum of Art + Design. With more than 13,000 square feet of exhibition space, the Museum is known for its presentation of exhibitions by emerging artists, as well as major figures in modern, post-modern and contemporary art. The MDC Museum of Art + Design vision is to present world-renowned artists, support the vast community of local emerging and established artists, and allow a platform to present exhibitions by MDC’s many distinguished students, alumni and faculty.
