Miami International Festival of the Arts

From April 15 through 18, 2013.

This year’s Miami International Festival of the Arts (MIFA) will kick-off on April 15th and feature an entertaining, fun-filled array of theater and dance performances, art exhibitions, book readings and film screenings at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus and the Carrie P. Meek Entrepreneurial Center in Miami. Events are free and open to the public.

Among the highlights, the four-day festival will open with a concert performance of this year’s award winning musical, Les Misérables – featuring the North Campus Musical Theater Ensemble and The Chamber Singers and Orchestra.

Now in its 12th year, MIFA 2013 will explore the worlds of music and dance with a Faculty Chamber Concert, two flute sonatas, a modern dance performance, and the Argentine Tango. The Power of Words: Panel Readings with Authors and the spoken word events will give audiences the opportunity to interact with professionals and try their hand at the art of literary recitation.

As part of the arts series, MDC’s School of Entertainment & Design Technology and Department of Arts & Philosophy will present the annual Cinema al Fresco series celebrating the film scores of Oscar® winning composer, James Horner. The outdoor screening, held at the North Campus Science Complex Plaza, will feature the North Campus Film Scoring Orchestra and the Chamber Singers performing musical selections from Hollywood blockbuster movies, including “Avatar,” “Apollo 13,” “Cocoon,” “Braveheart” and “Titanic.”

With the help of festivalgoers, the North Campus Pen Players and Chamber Singers will close MIFA 2013 with a rock ‘n’ roll sing-a-long performance from the musical film and Broadway performance “Grease.”
