WDNA-FM 88.9 Public Radio presents the 13th Annual Miami Jazz Film Festival, featuring documentary films that focus on jazz and world music. Known worldwide as South Florida’s premiere jazz music station, WDNA’s mission is to provide quality public-centric music, arts, and cultural programming to the residents of South Florida and beyond. This special evening will be a tribute to NEA Jazz Master Candido Camero who will join us for the screening and will receive the key to the City of Miami. Join us for an after-screening musical celebration at the WDNA Jazz Gallery.

Florida Premiere of Flags, Feathers, and Lies – Director: Pablo Palacios, USA, 2010, 78 min. We continue to follow New Orleans with the untold story of the Mardi Gras Indians featuring tribal chief, jazz saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr., who will present the film. Join us for an after-screening musical celebration at the WDNA Jazz Gallery.

Florida Premiere. Deconstructing Dad The Music, Machines and Mystery of Raymond Scott – Director: Stanley Warnow, USA, 2009, 100 min. This feature length documentary explores the life and work of this composer, bandleader, inventor, and electronic music pioneer, presented from the unique perspective his son.

Florida Premiere. Charlie Haden: Rambling Boy – Director: Reto Caduff, Switzerland, 2009, 84 min. A warm and overdue documentary presenting the life and work of the fascinating American musician, bandleader, composer, producer, educator, political activist and family man.

Tribute to Wilton “Bogey” Gaynair – The life and music of this amazing Jamaican saxophonist will be highlighted with a special visual presentation, narrated by renowned historian and musicologist, Herbie Miller. The music of Bogey Gaynair follows with Tony Greene & Friends This Tribute makes its international premiere at the WDNA Jazz Gallery.

Florida Premiere. Han Bennink: Hazentidjd – Director: Jellie Dekker, The Netherlands, 2009, 58 min. This stylized documentary depicts Dutch drummer and visual artist Han Bennink’s creative journey from art student, to free-lance percussionist to uncompromising improviser.

Florida Premiere. My Name is Albert Ayler – Director: Kasper Collin, Sweden, 2007, 58 min. This prophetic free jazz saxophonist, who today is seen as one of the most important innovators in jazz, was obsessed with his radical music and by the thought that people one day would understand it.

Florida Premiere. Rejoice and Shout – Director: Don McGlynn, USA, 2009, 115 min. Using vintage photos, probing interviews, and clips from hundreds of hours of rare film and recordings, this film takes on the entire 200-year evolution of gospel music in black America.
