New Horizons Band. September 2010.
The University of Miami Frost School of Music is now host to the New Horizons Band in Miami, an organization geared toward senior adults (age 50+) who want to learn or relearn to play a musical instrument. There are currently 150 New Horizons Music Programs nationwide, and The Frost School has also taken the initiative to teach senior adults in the community the joys of playing a musical instrument.
Beginner participants may attend classes on Monday and Wednesday mornings, 8:30 to 11:00 a.m., or on Saturday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. There is rolling admissions for this year. The Monday and Wednesday classes will meet at the Coral Gables Congregational Church 3010 DeSoto Blvd and the Saturday morning class will meet at the Frost School at the Coral Gables campus’ Broby Hall. According to Roy Ernst, founder of the New Horizons program in 1991 in Rochester, New York, “Playing music in groups supports good mental and physical health, besides being an unending source of joy.” New Horizons Band has been featured in many national newspapers and journal articles and even on NBC’s Today Show.
In addition to rehearsing, the New Horizons Band will be performing in concerts, parades, and other community activities. There are New Horizons Music camps that the musicians can participate in worldwide, meeting people with similar interests, while participating in a healthy life activity. Many band members attend music institutes to perform with other adult amateurs. Recent institutes for senior musicians have been held in Aspen, CO; Sydney, Australia; and Chautauqua, NY.
