Eighteen NWSA Dance Division students have been selected by former Merce Cunningham Dance Company member Patricia Lent to learn the work of Merce Cunningham. “There is no better way to promote Merce Cunningham’s legacy than to share his choreography with young dancers,” commented Lent. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work intensively with this group of talented, enthusiastic students on such a unique project. I am confident that our time together in the rehearsal studio and on stage will be filled with challenges and discoveries.”
The choreography will be presented in the form of what Cunningham referred to as an “Event” for performance in collaboration with the New World Symphony, as part of a special weekend celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the birth of Cunningham’s musical collaborator, composer John Cage.
The NWSA dancers are excited to be invited to collaborate with the New World Symphony, with the Cage composition Sixteen Dances, to be performed live by the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas.
In addition, the NWSA students will participate in a performance of Cunningham’s indeterminate dance work, Field Dances, accompanied by Cage’s Renga with the New World Symphony on Sunday.
“I am thrilled that our students will have the experience of learning Merce’s work from Patricia Lent, who brings it to life so vividly, in addition to having the opportunity to perform it to the music of John Cage played live at the New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas,” said Mary Lisa Burn, dean of dance at New World School of the Arts. “It will be a truly exciting artistic and educational experience for them and we are delighted to be collaborating in these programs with both the Merce Cunningham Trust and the New World Symphony. As the former Director of Education for the Cunningham Dance Foundation, I am personally delighted that our community will have these upcoming opportunities to see the works of both Cage and Cunningham performed with such authenticity by these talented young dancers and musicians.”
Performances will take place at the New World Center on February 8th at 8:00 p.m., and on February 10th at 2:00 p.m. Admission is $30 – $45. For information, please call 305.237.3341.
