Ravi Coltrane at Coral Gables Congregational Church

August 24th, 2006The Coral Gables Congregational Church will offer a concert by Ravi Coltrane, son of the legendary John Coltrane, who is a tenor and soprano saxophonist, bandleader, and composer. His career as a professional musician started back in 1991 when he met up with Elvin Jones, his father’s renowned drummer from the 60’s. Within a year, Ravi relocated to New York City and began playing with a variety of players including Rashied Ali, Wallace Roney, Antoine Roney, Kenny Barron, Cindy Blackman, Joe Lovano, Joanne Brackeen, and Steve Coleman. In 1997 after performing on over thirty recordings as a sideman, Ravi recorded his first album as leader. Moving Pictures was his well-rounded debut, leading Ravi to assemble his first touring group and travel widely in North America and Europe. Ravi’s second album, From the Round Box, revealed a growing sense of self-challenge and balanced esoteric covers with compelling originals. Shaping his own quartet through a series of recent tours and appearances, February of 2005 marked the release of Ravi’s fourth album as a leader. The title of this recording is In Flux. This release features pianist Luis Perdomo, bassist Drew Gress, and drummer E.J. Strickland. Coltrane continues to dig deeper, further forging his personal voice in the jazz tradition.
