Rising Stars, a professionally staged, energy-packed, one-of-a-kind performance, presents the extraordinary talent of high school and college students from New World School of the Arts, Florida’s premier arts institution.
The showcase begins at the New World Gallery with a juried visual arts exhibition featuring extraordinary student artworks. The show is as diverse as the school population and includes painting, drawing, design, sculpture, digital media and installations.

The evening continues just a few blocks away at the historic Olympia Theater – Gusman Center for the Performing Arts with a pre-performance VIP Reception to welcome guests to this artistic landmark. Following the reception, the performance showcases excerpts from works performed by the high school and the college students during the school year, including Once on this Island – a Caribbean-flavored award winning musical that combines the magic of love stories and the art of storytelling. The college actors will offer a sinister twist on the traditional fairy tales as they perform selected scenes from the ever-popular Tony Award winning musical Into the Wood
The melodies of Frank Ticheli will take over the Gusman as the NWSA Concert Band interprets Wild Nights under the direction of Brent Mounger, and led by maestro Alfred Gershfeld, the Symphony Orchestra will present Symphony Number 1 in F minor by Dmitri Shostakovich among other timeless compositions. Forced Entry, a rhythmically-intense work by guest choreographer Josée Garant, will bring forth the talent of the younger NWSA dancers. And among other moving choreography, the college dancers will present 1914, a powerful world-premiere in observance of the 100th anniversary of World War I, by renowned choreographer Darshan S. Bhuller.
NWSA Rising Stars Alumnus Award
The NWSA 2014 Rising Stars Alumnus Award will be presented to dancer/choreographer Rosie Herrera. Presented each year to a high school or college alum from New World School of the Arts, who is successfully contributing to his or her art form this prestigious recognition recognizes the alum’s artistic achievements, as well as her growth and development as an artist.
Rosie Herrera is a graduate from New World School with a BFA in Dance Performance. The Miami Light Project has commissioned her in association with the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing and the American Dance Festival. As a rehearsal director, co- choreographer and performer Rosie was in residency at the Chat Noir Cabaret in Miami Beach with the interdisciplinary performance ensemble Circ X. In 2009 she was in residency at the American Dance Festival recreating her work “Various Stages of Drowning: A Cabaret” on ADF dancers. Subsequently her company was presented at the festival in 2010 and 2011 where she premiered the ADF commissioned works: “Pity Party” and “Dining Alone” to sold out audiences. Rosie is a classically trained lyric coloratura soprano and performs with the Performers Music Institute Opera Ensemble as well as choreographs and stages operas independently in Miami.
Heart of Arts Award
The NWSA 2014 Heart of the Arts Award will be presented to the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. Offered to a person or institution who has been centrifugal to the arts, New World School of the Arts’ Heart of the Arts Award celebrates the arts and highlights the power of art as a catalyst to change the world.
Knight Foundation seeks to make the arts general in South Florida. Over the past six years, Knight has invested more than $86 million in the local cultural community. With endowment grants, the foundation helps ensure cultural institutions can connect with each of us. Through the Knight Arts Challenge, a community wide contest funding the best ideas for the arts, Knight encourages everyone in South Florida to participate in our culture of creativity.
About NWSA
New World School of the Arts was conceived in 1984 when the Florida State Legislature established the institution to provide artistically talented high school and college students the means to achieve both an academic education and artistic training. In September 1986, NWSA opened its doors to students in grades ten through twelve and in 1987 admitted the first class of college BFA students. NWSA’s audition-based programs are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance, Music, Theater and Art & Design. NWSA offers the high school diploma the AA college degree as well as a four-year BFA or BM degrees.
NWSA boasts alumni on Broadway, Grammy winners, dancers in companies like Alvin Ailey, and regarded visual artists exhibiting internationally including in ArtBasel and Arteamérica.
New World School of the Arts was created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts. It is an educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.
