Teatro en Miami Festival (TEMFest 2010) stems from the need to present, in a selective and distinctive manner, the various stage proposals by local groups and artists in order to create a common meeting ground that would contribute, expose and revitalize the city, the artists and the community.
It is vital for TEMFest to become an annual theater festival that boosts the local scene, which is suffering from lack of space and funds for its development. It is important to rescue the habit of cultural acquisition by the community; and to encourage participation by public institutions and private businesses and obtain their commitment to the artistic, cultural and intellectual development of the city. The status of Miami as the multicultural and commercial gateway between the United States and South America should be considered more as a cultural model in our country rather than as a mere commercial endeavor.
TEMFest will serve as a springboard for the local dramaturgy, through the presentation of books, drama contests, lectures and plays by authors living in Miami who for the first time, in some cases, will see their works staged as world premieres. The history and tradition of the Hispanic Theater in Miami has been lost and forgotten. TEMFest will lead the effort to rescue this history for the benefit of all, recording it in various media that will then be donated to different archives, universities and public libraries in the United States.
The use of the most recent technologies will be one of the distinctive characteristics of TEMFest, which will have a very important presence on the Internet and other social websites. TEMFest believes in the future. Thus, the Children’s Theater will participate in the festival. The local Children’s Theater is in urgent need of presenting their works and occupying the leading position it deserves. TEMFest will facilitate this encounter between the artists and children of Miami.
For over fifteen years, Teatro en Miami has trained hundreds of actors who are now promoters of the theater in the County. At TEMFest their acting, drama and theater workshops will contribute to the development of young actors and encourage their curiosity and imagination about this art.
To date, twelve companies have been confirmed. The Children’s Theater will be represented by Cirko Teatro and Miami Guiñol. Teatro en Miami (company) will have Dance-Theater with Free Soul Dance directed by Belma Suazo. Galiano 108 will stage the monologue “Santa Cecilia” by Abilio Estévez, directed by José González. El Idearium will present a night of monologues directed by Manuel Mendoza. Havanafama will stage “Luz Negra” by Álvaro Menen Desleal, directed by Juan Roca. The Hispanic Theater Guild will re-stage the play by Juan Carlos Rubio “Las heridas del “vent”, directed by Marcos Casanova. Cirko Teatro will present “Destino de dos cosas o tres” by Rafael Spregelburd, directed by Alejandro Vales. ICRA and Maroma Players will unite to present the play by José Abreu Felippe, “Alguien quiere decir una oración”, directed by Rolando Moreno. A version of the play “Marat-Sade” will be staged by Miguel Ponce’s Nuevo Teatro 66. Teatro Abanico, directed by Lili Rentería, will present “Tirando las cartas”, by Matías Montes Huidobro, and Teatro en Miami Studio will present “Aromas de un viaje”, written and directed by Ernesto García.
Every edition of TEMFest will present the BACO AWARD, designed by the artist Laura Luna. This year, the award will be given to a theater personality and to an institution whose contribution to the theater culture in Miami has been outstanding. Artist Laura Luna will also design this year’s TEMFest poster.
