Handel’s Choral Masterpiece April 22nd, 2007On Sunday, April 22nd at 3:00 p.m. the Miami Bach Society will offer its final performance of the 2006 – 2007 Season George Frideric Handel’s oratorio Saul. The concert will take place at the Temple Israel in downtown Miami and will be conducted by Donald Oglesby, the Miami Bach Society’s founder and Artistic Director. Featured soloists are Will Earl Spanheimer, Steven Rickards, Glenn Seibert, Juanita Marchand, Mandy Spivak, Matt Tresler and Korre D. Foster, bass. The University of Miami’s Collegium Musicum will sing the Chorus of Israelites, accompanied by the Miami Bach Society’s Chamber Orchestra, which will feature a number of Baroque period instruments. The work is based on the Old Testament account of the first Israelite king’s complex relationship with David, the killer of Goliath and then his son-in-law. It depicts David’s friendship with Jonathan, Saul’s son, and Saul’s efforts to destroy David. Considered the finest example of the Old Testament oratorio, the work is thought to be one of the supreme masterpieces of dramatic art. For more information, please call: 305.669.1376
