Tropical Baroque Music Festival

Coral Gables. From Mar 1st through Mar 16th, 2008.Tropical Baroque Music Festival. Miami EventsThe Miami Bach Society presents its ninth Tropical Baroque Music Festival. Held in venues throughout Coral Gables, it will present some of the finest early music artists and ensembles in the world.  The music begins with Fuoco e Cenere of France performing the 1608 Italian opera, La Dafne, by Marco da Gagliano. Sunday, March 2nd is Donald Oglesby with the Miami Bach including French music for fireworks by Rameau. Monday, Apollo’s Fire from Cleveland with a program of Vivaldi, and Tuesday, Camerata Köln of Germany performs works by members of the Bach family, Fasch, Telemann and Bodinus.
    
Wednesday, March 5th, Pedro Memelsdorff from Italy brings his group Mala Punica to perform Iter Ytalicum, a musical journey through mediaeval Padua, Milan, Naples and Florence. Thursday, a young keyboard artist from Paris, Aurèlien Delage, plays harpsichord works of Bach and Couperin. And on Friday, Hopkinson Smith, brilliant lutenist from Basel, Switzerland, plays a recital of selections for his period instrument. The festival concludes one week later on Sunday, March 16th with a special performance of Trinidad’s Lydian Steel performing Baroque favorites on the steel drums, on the great lawn of Fairchild Tropical Garden, where they performed their first concert for the festival seven years ago.

Saturday, March 1st, 8:00 p.m. La Dafne, Fuoco e Cenere, from Paris, directed by Jay Bernfeld, performs concert version of early Italian Baroque opera by Marco da Gagliano, First United Methodist Church of South Miami, 6565 Red Road.

Sunday, March 2nd, 7:00 p.m. Bach Society Annual Fireworks Concert Miami Bach Society’s Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Donald Oglesby performs French fireworks music and Baroque favorites, Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue.

Monday, March 3rd, 8:00 p.m. Apollo’s Fire, renowned American ensemble from Cleveland, makes its Festival debut performing works of Vivaldi, First United Methodist Church of Coral Gables, 536 Coral Way.

Tuesday, March 4th, 8:00 p.m. Camerata Köln from Germany returns to the Festival for an evening of German selections from members of the Bach family, Fasch, Telemann and Bodinus at the Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 DeSoto Boulevard.

Wednesday, March 5th, 8:00 p.m. Iter Ytalicum, Mala Punica from Italy gives a performance of mediaeval music from Padua, Naples, Milan and Florence in the sanctuary of the Church of the Little Flower, 2711 Indian Mound Trail.

Thursday, March 6th, 8:00 p.m. Aurelien Delage Harpsichord Recital, young French keyboard artist makes his debut at this year’s festival, playing Bach and Couperin at the Danielson Gallery, Biltmore Hotel.

Friday,  March 7th, 8:00 p.m. Hopkinson Smith Lute Recital, world renowned lute master comes from Switzerland to perform works from the Baroque repertoire, the Danielson Gallery, Biltmore Hotel.

Sunday, March 16th, 6:00 p.m. Lydian Steel, Renowned steel-drum band from Trinidad, under the direction of Pat Bishop, returns to perform Baroque favorites on the pans from the Caribbean, Fairchild Tropical Garden, 10901 Old Cutler Road.
