HistoryMiami exhibits South Beach, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community

Fri 27 Oct, 2017 - Sun 1 Apr, 2018

South Beach, 1974-1990: Photographs of a Jewish Community explores South Beach the way it was. During the 1970s and 1980s, highlighted photographers Gay Block, Gary Monroe, Richard Nagler, David Scheinbaum, and Andy Sweet each undertook long-term documentation projects of South Beach, before the neighborhood transformed into today’s world famous tourist and nightlife destination.

HistoryMiami Museum will display selections from each of their projects, offering personal portraits of the neighborhood in an era when South Beach was predominantly an elderly Jewish community. In addition to photography, the exhibition will also feature Gay Block’s documentary A Bie Gesunt (As Long As You’re Well), cameras, and archival material related to the highlighted photography projects.
