AMERICAN FANTASY CLASSICS HEX LINK, 2017 Site-specific intervention

Fringe Projects is pleased to announce the forthcoming temporary public art commission HEX LINK by American Fantasy Classics, a Milwaukee-based artist collaborative. HEX LINK is an interactive sculpture and sound based work that is an extension of American Fantasy Classics’ toll free interactive phone line/sound art gallery, 1-844-HEX-LINK, a digital space where the artists craft collaborative sound based exhibitions, accessible anytime by telephone.

By installing a modified outdoor pay phone in downtown Miami, passers by will experience the phone ringing at a designated schedule, enticing curious passersby to answer and engage with the artwork. The participant will listen to a prerecorded program and be prompted to answer a number of questions through pressing the keypad—a typical strategy of most corporate call centers. Call content will offer the listener access to a fictional new age, ambiguously cult-like, pseudoscientific self-help hot line called MIND AXE. HEX LINK activates the mundane and anachronistic phone booth, producing an unanticipated, participatory exploration.

“Our goals are to experiment formally with sound, sculpture, and a collaborative practice, while also overlaying a specific genre aura, and letting it drive the overall drama and character of the project. Participants should find it both fun and unnerving, a surreal and unexpected experience that is ultimately mysterious and ambiguous. This project is the continuation of the construction of a fictional world, here expressed as concrete fantasy.” –American Fantasy Classics
