Lydia Rubio unveils installation at The Women's Park

March 28th, 2009.  Art in Public Places. Miami ArtsArt in Public Places is about to unveil its latest art commission: the work of Miami-based artist Lydia Rubio at The Women's Park located on Flagler Street in Miami. The installation is comprised of a sculptural gate and a mosaic floor, and the exhibition will be complemented by twenty-two preparatory drawings and maquettes used to conceive the artworks.

Through history women have been represented as symbols of fantasy and virtue, bearers of the cosmic forces. Lydia Rubio's gates are structured as a linear narrative from West to East of the Flagler Street park boundary. The Gates of Courage, Love and Wisdom, range in scale from 9 ft to 11ft high and 24 to 30 ft long, and display a variety of symbols: images of women and words associated with women. There will also be a twelve feet square mosaic floor inserted on the pavement on Flagler Street, in front of the Gate of Love, with a figure of a woman and the words of a poem by the Cuban writer Dulce Maria Loinaz. The intention of this piece is to serve as a landmark, provoke thought and be an educational device to the general public and children visiting the Women’s Park.

Lydia Rubio is a mid career artist who has been fully engaged in producing paintings, sculptures and public art. Rubio has recently completed several large-scale public art sculpture commissions including the new Raleigh Durham Airport Terminal 2 and the town square of Clayton both in North Carolina.
