R & R STUDIOS FLOWER POWER, 2017 Site-specific intervention

Fringe Projects is pleased to present FLOWER POWER, a monumental site-specific installation in Miami’s downtown by Miami-based collective R & R Studios. Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt of R & R Studios are among Miami’s most internationally celebrated interdisciplinary practitioners connecting art, architecture, and design.

FLOWER POWER appropriates the form and function of a flag by inhabiting one of the largest existing flagpoles in Downtown Miami. Adorning this 30 x 20’ flag with thousands of brightly colored flowers, R & R brings the spectacular to street-level and injects an element of fantasy and beauty into everyday life. The unexpected discovery of FLOWER POWER in downtown Miami suggests a spirit of peaceful resistance, challenges established symbols, and presents the possibility of a utopian world.

R & R Studios, the collaborative office of Roberto Behar and Rosario Marquardt is a multidisciplinary practice weaving together visual arts, architecture, design and the city. Their works propose encounters of stories and spaces, which alternate between the personal and the public, the quotidian and the extraordinary, the poetic and the political. R & R Studios works erase boundaries between art and life and suggest “imaginary solutions” for a better world. R & R Studios are known for creating social sculptures for public pleasure. The biggest M in the world, Red M, is a permanent public artwork commissioned by Miami-Dade County, Art in Public Places, and most recently Besame Mucho, their “super billboard” at Coachella Music and Arts Festival suggest a world of possibilities were the fantastic becomes part of everyday life. Rosario and Roberto received Diplomas in Architecture from the Universidad Nacional de Rosario in Argentina and later study at the legendary Institute for Architecture and Urban Studies in New York City. Roberto has been a Visiting Artist at the Getty Research Center in Los Angeles and a Visiting Professor at Harvard University and Cornell University and together with Rosario Visiting Artists at the American Academy in Rome. Roberto Behar & Rosario Marquardt currently teach at the University of Miami School of Architecture.
