Russian Dreams presents a selection of cutting-edge works by contemporary artists from Russia who explore nostalgia, both as the subject of a myth and as an opposition to mythology. This exhibition is collaboration between the Bass Museum of Art and the Multimedia Art Museum, Moscow. Guest curator Olga Svilova works with designer Yuri Avvakumov, combining the work of Russian artists of the 1970s and 1980s, during the pivotal time when the "Russian underground art movement" was born, and when “Perestroika,” or economic restructuring, was initiated by Mikhail Gorbachev.
1991 marked the collapse of the Soviet Union and the great Soviet era. Today, after seventeen years living in a new socio-economic reality, nostalgia for long-lost myths still exists for its people. The works in this exhibition resonate with the disconnected, random associations of dreams, and a sense of profound melancholy over what has been lost. Russian Dreams reflects ambivalence towards a lost Utopia, as well as a sense of contradiction and tension that is today’s twenty-first century Russia.
Russian Dreams brings the latest in contemporary Russian photography, video and installation art to Miami Beach, and explores the mindset of a new generation. Artists in the exhibition include: the de-mythologizing Sotsart, AES+F Group, Alexander Ponomarev, Dubosarsky and Vinogradov, Yuri Avvakumov, among others. Works by the new generation of young artists between the ages of 20-30 will also be shown.
Among the provocative works in the exhibition is a work by Alexei Kostroma’s, Feathered Aggression, that communicates irony and humor by depicting a cannon covered with white feathers. The AES+F group (Arzamasova Tatiana, Evzovich Lev, Svyatsky Evgeny + Fridkes Vladimir) present hauntingly-surreal digital images, while Leonid Tishkov and Boris Bendikov’s work entitled Roof, from the Private Moon series, embodies ideas of melancholy, romanticism, and isolation.
