The Frost Art Museum – FIU. Folk Art Selections from the Permanent Collection

Apr 29 through May 29, 2011.

Folk Art possesses the unique characteristic in which it can chronicle a move towards civilization yet rapidly diminish with modernity, industrialization, or outside influence. The very nature of Folk Art is specific to its particular culture. Folk Art emanates from the everyday people of a nation or region and usually reflects the traditional culture, especially everyday or festive items produced or decorated by unschooled artists.

This exhibition features works from The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum’s collection, exhibiting works by American artists such as Thornton Dial, Purvis Young, Leroy Almon, Sultan Rogers, Annie Tolliver and many others.

A special program titled Introduction to Museum Ethics, Policies and Procedures, which introduces all Museum Studies students to the general workings of the institution, accompanies this exhibition. Through this innovative program, students gain an overview of most aspects of the museum’s operations. This year, students are jointly curating an exhibit with artwork from the collection of the Frost Art Museum. Together, they are cataloging and researching the American Folk Art collection to determine the overall purpose of the exhibit, then to choose artwork, develop the layout and labels, and create educational materials. Folk Art Selections from the Permanent Collection – Inaugural Museum Studies Exhibit kicks off an annual process of hands-on instruction at the Frost.
