Upcoming Events at the Lowe Art Museum

From Jul 27th through Sep 13th, 2008.The Lowe Art Museum at the University of Miami is presenting several events related to its ongoing exhibition Rare Egyptian Artifacts starting this month and running through September 2008. The Museum is located at 1301 Stanford Drive in Coral Gables, right by the university's entrance.

Sunday, July 27th, 2008. 2:00 p.m. Family Program
An Egyptian Adventure. Presented by Frank Lakus. Egyptian Puppet Show followed by an art activity.
 
"An Egyptian Adventure" begins with a visit to an Egyptian Bazaar in search of clues to the location of a lost tomb. Puppeteer and storyteller Frank Lakus portrays a wacky archaeologist in search of the tomb of Pharoah Amassis-the real ruler of Egypt. Examining the various articles for sale in the market allows the audience to learn a little about life in ancient Egypt. The discovery of carved cartouches on the stone walls of the set lead to the “opening” of a detailed burial tomb complete with wall paintings, carving, statues and a few more surprises. A rollicking dance by a marionette mummy lightens the tone. Talking stone status narrate the shadow-puppet visualization of the story, The Egyptian Cinderella, the earliest recorded version of the rags-to-riches story.

LoweDown Happy Hour “Egyptian Style”. Featuring a guided tour of Excavating Egypt. Mediterranean Food and Entertainment.

Thursdays, August 28, September 5th and 25th, 2008. 5:00, 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. PBS Film Series: Egypt’s Golden Empire.
 
In 1570 B.C., Rome was a marsh, the Acropolis an empty rock, but Egypt was 1,000 years old. The pyramid-builders were gone, yet Egypt still awaited its New Kingdom, an empire forged by conquest and remembered for eons. Egypt's Golden Empire comes to life through letters and records evoking the passion and riches of a time when Egypt was the center of the known world, its Pharaohs called gods, and great cities, temples and tombs built. This event is free with paid Museum admission and for members, UM Students, Faculty, Staff and Alumni. Film will be shown in the Beaux Arts Gallery.
               
Saturday, September 13th, 2008. 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Teacher Workshop. Excavating Egypt. Teachers will learn about and tour the exhibition, and learn to connect their classroom curriculum to Egypt, archaeology and art.
